Kwik Cricket

Following the incredible success of last year’s ASDA’s National Primary School Cup, the 2012 competition was launched on the 23^rd April with appearances from Scottish national players Gordon Drummond and Gordon Goudie.

The event saw lucky pupils from Our Lady of the Mission Primary School in Glasgow receive an exclusive coaching session from the two cricket stars.

Gordon Drummond commented:

 “The coaching session with the children from Our Lady of the Mission Primary School was a massive success today and it was a great way to kick off the 2012 Asda National Primary School Cup. Myself and Gordon Goudie were introduced to the sport by playing Kwik Cricket, so it was good to see the pupils enjoying the session as much as we did.”

The players and cricket were joined by several local members of Scottish Parliament who were also there to show their support for the competition and to take part in the fun.

England stars, Jimmy Anderson and Matt Prior, turned up to Aston Manor Cricket Club near Edgbaston, to give a coaching session to some excited Asda kwik cricketers.

The pair, who have both played influential roles in England's success in the test series against India this summer, spoke to the youngsters, gave them coaching tips and signed autographs,a s they themselves took time out of their busy training schedule ahead of the Edgbason test match.

As if two England stars was not enough, Ravi Bopara unexpectedly came over from Edgbaston to meet the young cricketers, share his batting tips and sign autographs. 

The England players made this statement about the day:

'We came here today to support the Asda Kwik Cricket Competition and help to encourage children playing cricket in the UK. It's been a great day and I hope everyone involved enjoyed themselves. The PCA did a great job organising this event, along with support from Aston Manor CC and Asda.'

The ASDA Kwik Cricket girls’ and year 6 mixed national finals are taking place on July 19^th and July 20^th at Derby CCC this year, with the best 16 teams from all around the country battling it out to become national champions on each day. The play will commence at 10:00am on both days.

The schools taking part are either winners or runners up of their respective regions to qualify for this event, making them one of the top 16 primary schools in the whole country.  The competition started out with 12,000 schools and 130,000 children so to get to the final in itself is amazing.   Many of them will be coming from miles in order to enjoy one of the biggest days of their lives.

For the girl’s national final on Tuesday, Katherine Brunt (England Women Cricketer) will be present to meet the players and sign autographs. On Wednesday, the mixed teams will get the chance to meet an ex-England player who will be coming down early in the afternoon to motivate youngsters to continue playing cricket.

We've been getting lots of emails from the Asda Kwik Cricketers all around the country and we thought it would be nice to upload some of them on the website. We realise that those people who spend their time coaching kwik cricket after school hours, driving their teams to the tournaments and making sure that children take up this amazing sport, often do not get any sort of recognition for their great effort. If nothing else, we thought it would be nice to let you guys know about some of these people...here's email from Jodie:

My name is Jodie Parke, I'm ten years old and a pupil at Northstead Cp School. Mr I Johnson has encouraged me to play cricket at school  for the last four years, he is a TA at our school and the main sports man. He's  fab, whenever the weather is nice he arrives on the field at lunchtime to encourage us all to play cricket. You don’t have to be the best, he just makes it fun, he takes us to all the competions, he also does girls cricket on Fridays after school. Today for the second year running we have just won the kwik cricket completion in Scarborough, Whippee we go on to Harrogate. He really is great, I leave primary school soon and will really miss him. Thought this would be a good way to say Thank-you. He often says I'd do better if I talked less, but he's taught me to really love a sport and I've told him to watch out for me playing for England when I'm bigger.

Your Asda Kwik Cricket team 

40 lucky children from Hampshire travelled to the Rose Bowl Stadium on Monday last week, June 13, to meet their cricket heroes Steve Finn and Alistair Cook ahead of their 3rd npower test match against Sri Lanka. Half of the kids won this amazing opportunity after their teachers and coaches took part in the competition in the News of the World - these were kwik cricketers from West Wittering CC and Hiltingbury JS in Eastleigh. The other 20 kids were picked by the cricket development officers and came from local primary schools around Hedge End. 



It was amazing 2 hours for everyone involved, not only for the youngesters who took part in the coaching sessions conducted by Steve and Alistair, but also their parents, coaches and teachers who didn't miss a chance to have their pictures taken and shirts signed by the England heroes.




Cecily, lovely community colleague from Asda Eastleigh, came down to hand out refreshments and drink.  



Shaun Standing from West Wittering CC who was present on the day, commented: 'Thanks for Monday afternoon, the boys from West Wittering CC had a fantastic time at the Rose Bowl.'

With the Asda Kwik Cricket 2011 under way, we encourage all teachers and couches to send us their stories and match reports, and let us know of players that deserve recognition.

Here's the match report sent to us by Kevin Harvey, year 6 leader and team manager at Chalkwell Hall JS:

 Chalkwell Hall Junior School’s Boys Kwik Cricketers are in jubilant mood after emerging victorious from the Southend Primary School’s Kwik Cricket Festival. Finishing third last year meant the boys were even hungrier for success in this year’s competition. This hunger proved invaluable as Chalkwell defeated last year’s winners-Alleyn Court-in the final.

The first group match was a nervous affair against Heycroft Primary School. After electing to bat there were a number of tense performances and the boys struggled to build a defendable total. However as Chalkwell’s boys came out to field the tide turned as accurate bowling and sharp fielding restricted the opposition helping to provide Chalkwell’s first win. The second match against Bournemouth Park School produced some excellent cricket. After some fairly decent batting Chalkwell went out to field. The boys were going to have to bowl well and they certainly didn’t disappoint. Wickets fell regularly for Bournemouth Park but it was the hattrick taken by Jess Dyos in the penultimate over that enabled Chalkwell to emerge as group winners.

The quarter finals saw Chalkwell playing Earls Hall for a place in the semis. Surprisingly this was the most comfortable of Chalkwell’s wins as Earls Hall were pegged back to under 200 runs.

Next up was the semi-final against Leigh North Street Junior School. This game kept everyone on the edge of their seats as both sides matched each other run for run. Leigh North Street were restricted to just over 200 runs. As Chalkwell came out to bat they knew that not conceding wickets was important. After a tense innings everything rested upon the final ball of the final over, the scores were level. The final ball was bowled to Ethan Evison who let the ball pass his stumps. Chalkwell progressed to the final as they had taken the greater number of wickets.

And so to the final where Chalkwell took on Alleyn Court. Chalkwell fielded first and bowled exceptionally well, taking wickets on a regular basis. Again the batting just had to be steady. After four overs Will Dove strode out and notched up a couple of fours and a six putting daylight between the teams. From that point on Chalkwell extended their run count and ensured a thrilling victory.

The Chalkwell team are now very much looking forward to representing Southend-on-Sea in the Essex finals at Billericay Cricket Club on the 28^th June.

A special mention goes to one of our boys - Jess Dyos - who took four wickets in one over during one of the matches. He was absolutely amazing!!

 'We took part in Walsall's Open Kwik-Cricket competition earlier this week and one of our players hit six sixes (!!!) in the final over of the match (Palfrey A v Bluecoat B).  He is a talented left-hander and his name is Areeb Shiraz.'

Well done Areeb and keed up the good work!

To do this, you need to make up a team of 8 people who can be your friends, parents or teachers, or anyone who plays kwik cricket. Then go to the kwik cricket home page (www.asda.com/kwikcricket) and click on the 'sign up' button (top right-hand corner). Wait for an email confirming your registration and then go to the 'Community' section to set up your own team.

Once the website has approved your team, get your 8 team mates to sign up to the site aswell. Once they have registered on the kwik cricket website they must go to the 'Community' section and search for your team (so make sure they know what you have called your team!). To become a part of your team they must simply click 'Join Team' and then wait for you to approve them as a team member.

Now for the important part for winning the prizes...

To win a prize you have to email asdakwikcricket@havas-se.com stating that you have signed up and want to be in with a chance of winning a prize.
