Kwik Cricket

ASDA supporting National Kwik Cricket

2009 was the fourth year we have been the very proud sponsors of the National ASDA Kwik Cricket competition. Kwik Cricket is the result of many years of detailed product development and research by the England and Wales Cricket Board in consultation with cricket coaches, Cricket Development Managers, education authorities, teachers and children.

About Kwik Cricket

ASDA Kwik Cricket is an inclusive sport and every player has an opportunity to ‘do everything’ (bowling, fielding and batting). It’s ideal for kids to learn all about cricket because it simplifies the game to its most basic level and keeps kids interested throughout.

The emphasis is on watching and hitting the ball when batting, and there's no problem with anyone getting hurt as the ball is soft, therefore there is no need for protective equipment.

In practice any number of children can play, from 2 to 32. Simply adapt the game to your own particular environment in terms of time available and numbers playing.

Over the years, the equipment has been constantly improved to meet the requirements of today’s children, teachers, coaches, young leaders, parents and other adults who will help our future young cricketers.

Aimed at both girls and boys, it is an under 11 competition that involves 130,000 kids across 40 counties and is the largest UK sports competition that exists for this age group. Over 12,000 schools took part in 2009 and over 40,000 kids were awarded a Gold, Silver or Bronze certificates in the Kwik Cricket Skill Awards – designed to fit Key Stage 1 & 2 of the National Curriculum.

The competition starts at local district finals and proceeds to County finals. If the team is extremely good they can make it all the way to the National final held at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds. In addition to the Year 6 Mixed competition, Kwik Cricket launched a Girls competition in 2008 which has enjoyed huge success. ASDA Kwik Cricket is also open to kids who play cricket recreationally at a local cricket club.

2009 was a great year for English Cricket following the men's victory in the Ashes and the women's victory in the World Cup, and it has once again proved to be a fantastic year for the Asda Kwik Cricket Competition. It has continued to grow year on year, with around 135,000 boys and girls now taking part across the UK, from over 12,000 primary schools.

Numerous festivals through the summer were supported by members of the successful Ashes winning England Team, namely Alastair Cook, Matt Prior, Graeme Swann and James Anderson, and the World Cup Winning England Women, Charlotte Edwards, Caroline Atkins, Katherine Brunt and Sarah Taylor.

The tournament ran from May until the UK finals of the "girls" and "year 6 mixed" competitions took place at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds on the 15th and 16th July. Congratulations to Lowes Wong from Nottingham in the "girls" competition and to Bengeo from Hertford in the "year 6 mixed" on both holding their nerve through district, county and regional finals to be crowned 2009 UK champions.
